From the Foreword

By JACKSON BROWNE

Which is your truth? A truth that exists in itself -- apart from a quest for profit and ratings -- and which is the truth whether you know it or not? Or a truth that is researched and shaped and marketed for your consumption, and which must compete with entertainment news for your attention? Which is your truth?

Like Danny Schechter, when I heard the phrase "the more you watch, the less you know" it moved me to talk about the impact television has on our lives. Jeff Cohen and I wrote a song called "Information Wars," about the control of information, and in it we portrayed TV as a battleground.

I salute those people in the trenches of television who labor to bring us programming of depth and substance. Because that is work. And those who fight for programming and coverage that is inclusive and democratic, I salute them. Because democracy is work.
